FAQ for employees of the Mathematical Institute of the University Göttingen regarding the summer term 2020¶

- When will the courses of the summer term begin?¶

The faculty of mathematics and informatics has no ability to influence when it will be possible again to offer courses requiring attendance.
From the 20th of April 2020, the teaching unit mathematics wants to offer as many courses online as possible.

- As a research assistant, do I have to be present in my institute in Göttingen this summer term, or can I stay in my home town?¶

The university and heads of the institutes will be making the guidelines. Most important is currently that you are reachable - by the institute's secretaries, as well as by the colleagues in teaching and research you are working with and, if appropriate, by students in your courses. This includes at least checking emails daily and the messages in Stud.IP, too.
The guidelines on social distancing could change quickly over the entire term.

- How will online courses be provided for the attendants?¶

Foundation for the online courses will be Stud.IP with its media server. There, videos, podcasts and other formats can be accessed online. In addition to that, further tools will be required, e. g. for livestreams (as casts) of lectures and exercises.

- Will there be a replacement for lectures, hall exercises, practica, exercises?¶

Lectures and exercises are planned. The technical prerequisites and preparations of the lecturers are operating at high intensity. In the end, which solutions are sensible for hall exercise and practicum in the respective courses, will be decided by the lecturers.

- Where will the online courses, especially the livestreams, be recorded?¶

In principle, beginning on the 20th April it will be possible to do livestreams and video recordings in all lecture halls and seminar rooms. It will be done from a professional tablet ("Smart-Podium") and recorded with a headset and a webcam. At minimum, you will be able to come into a room and do the course there. Audio is recorded along with the contents of the tablet screen or the video from the webcam.

- How do I get my exercise digitally onto the internet?¶

In every lecture hall and seminar room of the mathematical institute, a professional tablet will be connected to the network. There, one will be able to log onto the gwdg-server, open pdf- and office-documents, read chats and create handwritten notes.
Together with a headset, one is able to use the device instead of the blackboard and stream/record the content of the screen. For that, video conferencing software allowing the participation of the attendants will be bought.
The recording-capabilities of theblackboard are being extended but cannot be provided for all rooms.

- Which approaches will be supported when recording with technical support?¶

Because of the possibility that many courses have to be recorded at once, exercises can only be helped with when using a supported format. You can feel free to try other formats and technical solutions, but that can only happen idependently, if only because every member in the team is busy with getting the standard solution to work.

- What is the standard procedure for exercise that get recorded?¶

1. Your execercise will - if nothing else is arranged - be recorded at the time and place declared in the course catalogue (UniVZ). Specifically, for a time of 12:00 to 14:00 you will be able to enter the building at 11:45,
have time for technical preperations from 11:45 to 12:15, make the recording/cast of the exercise from 12:15 to 13:45 and do follow-up work and leave the room from 13:45 to 13:55.
2. Please bring your headset along with your documents.
3. Please arrive at the building half an hour early. In case the building will still be closed, half an hour before, entry is granted (7:45, 9:45, 11:45, 13:45, 15:45). It is important not to come late, since valuable time for preparation would be lost until someone opens the door for you. If your exercises are from 18:00 to 20:00, please report to Mrs. Dingenotto in the secretary's office a few days in advance (0551-39-27195; office@mathematik.uni-goettingen.de).
4. Please adhere to the suggested minimum distance of 2m from other people when waiting or when in the building.
5. Please proceed to the room where, according to the course catalogue, you will do the exercise. Please wait in front of the room until the person/people of the previous course have left.
6. Please disinfect pen and keyboard.
7. Please log into the "Smart-Podium" with your GWDG-password.
8. Please plug in your own headset.
9. Please open programs and websites you will need during your exercise (notes, Stud.IP, Adobe PDF, Powerpoint, geogebra and similar)
10. Please start (according to the accompanying plan, eventually with help from support) the recording and the cast.
11. Please carry out your exercise and take care to finish it punctually at 9:45, 11:45, ..., 19:45.
12. Please save the recording and upload it to the Stud.IP media server.
13. Please pack your headset and take it with you.
14. Please disinfect pen and keyboard.
15. If necessary, finish doing tasks that must be done in the building like printing exercises or scanning corrections. After that, please leave the building as soon as possible.
16. Please adhere to the suggested minimum distance of 2m from other people in the building at all times.

- How will students get to know what will be offered?¶

In the coming term it will be very important to follow the Stud.IP courses very regularily. There, everything will be distributed and shared, e.g. if courses will be recorded and if download/streaming will be provied. In case of livestreams as cast/video conference, this should be done at the time declared in the course catalogue.

- Is it possible to do and record courses at a conventional blackboard?¶

Recordings of blackboards are possible in HS1, HS6. Preparations are ongoing in the Siztungszimmer. This can not be provided for all courses.

- Is it possible to livestream a blackboard lecture?¶

In the Mathematical Institute, the team around Stefan Koospal is working on making livestreaming of blackboard lectures possible in HS1, HS6, Maxmium and SZ.

- How will one be able to prepare?¶

Various people are working together on materials and a compact online schooling on how to put in place, plan and technically execute online exercises.

- Where is the present technical status documented?¶

The present status of the technical equipment of the MI is found here:
https://projects.gwdg.de/projects/intranet_math/wiki/mivirtuallectureen
Discussion is ongoing in an open session:
https://studip.uni-goettingen.de/dispatch.php/course/details?sem_id=
Particularly, the possibilites of the usage of Stud.IP and ILIAS for supporting e-Learning are displayed there.

- When will pending module exams from the winter term be done?¶

With the current (early April) regulations on social distancing, it is currently not possible to do exams with many members. When the regulations change in a way that allows it, exams would be appointed 14 days laters in a way that most exams will be possible on two following weekends on Fridays, Saturdays and maybe even Sundays.

- Where do I send students with questions on the planning of their course of studies and need for advice?¶

Please refer to Dr. Denise Krempasky, the academic advisor for mathematics, which is reachable as follows:
E-Mail: studienberatung@math.uni-goettingen.de
from 06.04 to 18.04 weekdays: 9:00 to 13:00 per telephone at +49 (0)551 / 39-27762
with previous appointment also on video chat.

- How do I contact professors of courses where I will collaborate?¶

Please get in touch, for example over Stud.IP, with your matters. If necessary, make clear that you wish for a conversation. It would be helpful to state how to reach you.

- Can/could/should/must we use tools (BigBlueButton, ...) in other contexts?¶

The social distancing has shown the importance of regular conversations about mathematics to many of us. We can only encourage that. Please use the resources that the GWDG are offering:
https://info.gwdg.de/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=en:services:mobile_working:videoconferencing_tools:start
On this site, you will also find hints on data protection.
For private usage, please use other tools: Skype, Signal, WhatsApp, FaceTime ....

- What kind of support can I get for mobile work?
An overview of the GWDG's services is given here:
https://info.gwdg.de/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=en:services:mobile_working:start¶
